If you’re expecting a baby (first of all — congratulations 🤍), one of the most common questions I get is:

“When should I book my newborn session?”

And it’s such an important question — because timing plays a big role in both your experience and the type of images we’ll capture.

The short answer?
Most newborn sessions are scheduled within the first 10–15 days after birth.

But let’s walk through it together so you can feel completely confident in your timing 👇🏼

The Ideal Timeline (Week-by-Week)

Before Baby Arrives (Second–Third Trimester)

This is the best time to book your newborn session.

Most photographers (myself included) take on a limited number of newborn sessions each month to allow flexibility once babies arrive — so booking early ensures you have a spot reserved.

✨ When you book:

  • We choose a tentative date based on your due date
  • I leave room in my calendar in case baby arrives early or late
  • You don’t have to think about it again once you’re in newborn mode

👉 If you’re currently pregnant, this is your sign to get this checked off your list.

0–7 Days Old

During the first week, babies are:

  • Extra sleepy 😴
  • Naturally curled up
  • Still adjusting to life outside the womb

While this window can be beautiful for very sleepy images, I typically allow a little more time for everyone to settle in — especially for relaxed, in-home sessions.

7–15 Days Old (The Sweet Spot 🤍)

This is the ideal window for newborn photography.

At this stage, babies are still:

  • Sleepy and snuggly
  • Comfortable being gently moved
  • Easier to settle throughout the session

This allows us to capture those soft, connected moments in a very natural, baby-led way — without forcing anything.

✨ Most of my in-home newborn sessions are scheduled during this time.

2–4 Weeks Old

If you missed the earlier window, don’t worry — it is absolutely still possible to have a beautiful session.

At this stage, your baby may be:

  • More alert 👀
  • Stretching out more
  • Beginning to show little expressions

Your gallery may include more eye contact and interaction, rather than super curled-up poses — which can be just as meaningful.

A gentle note to keep in mind:
Around the 3–5 week mark, many babies develop a bit of newborn acne or skin sensitivity, which is completely normal and temporary.

✨ Because of this, many parents prefer to schedule their session a bit earlier, when baby’s skin is typically at its softest.
That said, if your session falls during this stage, there’s no need to stress — I’ll guide you through everything, and light skin adjustments can always be made during editing.

What If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?

This is one of the biggest concerns for moms — and I promise, I’ve got you.

When you book your session:

  • We choose a tentative date
  • I adjust my schedule once baby arrives
  • We stay flexible based on how you’re feeling postpartum

✨ All you need to do is send me a quick message once your baby is here.

A Relaxed, In-Home Experience

All of my newborn sessions take place in the comfort of your home — which means:

  • No rushing out the door
  • No packing up the baby
  • No pressure to “be ready”

Sessions are completely baby-led and typically last 2–2.5 hours, giving us plenty of time for:

  • Feeding breaks
  • Outfit changes
  • Snuggles in between

It’s designed to feel calm, flexible, and easy for your whole family.

So… When Should You Book?

A little summary:

  • ✔️ Book during pregnancy (second or third trimester)
  • ✔️ Plan your session for 7–15 days after birth
  • ✔️ Stay flexible — your baby sets the timeline

Final Thoughts

There is no perfect timing.

No perfect baby.

No perfect moment.

The beauty of newborn photography is capturing your baby exactly as they are — in those early days that somehow feel both slow and fleeting at the same time.

And I promise… you’ll never regret having those memories documented.
